STADIO FLAMINIO - REGENERATION
Renovation of historical sport masterpiece in Rome
Stadio Flaminio in Rome, a masterpiece of modernist architecture designed in the 1950s by Antonio and Pier Luigi Nervi, is at the heart of a redevelopment scheme by OBR – Open Building Research. The project aims to restore the stadium’s original integrity through an integrated conservation approach, preserving the forms and material character of its reinforced concrete structure while safeguarding its architectural and engineering significance.
Central to this approach is an advanced HBIM (Heritage Building Information Modelling) model, developed to document and analyse the building in detail, from the stands and stairways to the spaces beneath them. The model supports the planning of targeted interventions that respect the stadium’s structural complexity and heritage value.
Alongside conservation, the project reimagines how the spaces are used, with particular attention to the areas beneath the stands and the semi-Olympic swimming pool. Their renewal creates new opportunities for social interaction, culture and sport, bringing these spaces back into active use.
Building services design supports this transformation, integrating contemporary technical requirements into the historic architecture. Carefully coordinated engineering solutions accommodate the new uses while respecting the character and spatial qualities of Nervi’s work.
