The intervention is part of the facility upgrade programme promoted by the Campania Region starting with the 2019 Universiade, aimed at equipping the city of Salerno with modern, safe sports facilities capable of hosting events of national and international importance. The decision to act on the area of the “Vincenzo Volpe” Field and the Palatulimieri represents a strategic opportunity to complete the urban regeneration and enhancement of the eastern coastal strip.

The project area, approximately 43,000 sqm, is located in a strategic position, less than one kilometre from the Arechi Stadium and close to the coastal road.

The latter facility, inaugurated in the early 1990s and currently certified to host Serie B matches, is home to Salernitana Calcio games. It has a capacity of about 31,300 spectators, reduced to 26,500 due to public-order limitations in the Curva Nord. The structure consists of four reinforced concrete stands arranged to form a rectangle open at the corners, with lower and upper tiers, but it lacks a roof, leaving the audience exposed to the elements.
