The Isola project involves the development of a mixed-use complex that includes residential buildings, a class "A" office building, two cultural buildings, a small-business component located along Via Confalonieri, pertinent car parks distributed over three underground floors and a road system and green areas that connect to the wider system of green and traffic areas already part of the PII Garibaldi Repubblica.
The Gross Area Perimeter is equal to 29,000 square meters which corresponds to a total gross area of approximately 72,000 sqm (including 30,000 square meters of underground parking lots). The residential functions are prevalent, including the development of a complex of "urban villas" and apartments, within which there is also a block of housing for subsidized housing, and the well-known Bosco Verticale complex.
The Bosco Verticale is the most important of the new residence projects within the PII Isola; consists of two residential towers of 80 and 112 m in height (27 and 19 floors, 113 total residences) able to accommodate 800 trees between 3 and 9 meters high, 11,000 between perennials and ground cover, 5,000 shrubs, for a total of over 100 different species. The diversity of plants and their characteristics produce humidity, absorb CO2 and dust, produce oxygen, protect from radiation and acoustic pollution, improving the comfort of living.
The issues related to environmental sustainability are addressed by the project with respect to different approaches: the green curtain favors the creation of a microclimate by filtering pollutants and fine dust, technological devices contribute to the optimization, recovery and production of energy.
In 2014 Il Bosco Verticale in Milan won the International Highrise Award, establishing itself on the other 5 prestigious finalists of the international award: the 'De Rotterdam' building designed by Rem Koolhaas, 'One Central Park' in Sydney is Renaissance Barcelona Fiera Hotel 'designed by Jean Nouvel and the Chinese complex' Sliced Porosity Block 'by Chengdu designed by Steven Holl.
