PERUGINA FACTORY

Industrial Complex

1964

At the beginning of the 1960s, the Perugina factory, located in the Fontivegge area since 1915, could no longer meet the growing production needs of the company. Consequently, production was moved to San Sisto, in a large rural area that quickly became one of the most modern production centers in Italy. With the intention of meeting the needs of working mothers, the designer included a company nursery in the structure, the first in Umbria and among the first in Italy. By the end of the 1980s, the factory was handed over from the Buitoni family to CIR and then to Nestlé, undergoing various transformations over time. The architecture of the facility is characterized by its horizontal extension, interrupted on the main facade by a circular ramp for vehicles and inverted pyramid canopies at the entrance. The workspace is designed with a flexible layout that adapts to various functions, ensuring spacious and bright areas. The nursery, located in an elevated and separate position from the factory, is connected through a covered pedestrian passage, allowing direct connection between the workplace and the nursery. The design of the outdoor spaces, entrusted to Pietro Porcinai, includes parking lots, a pond, artificial hills, and fences, with particular attention to minimizing the environmental impact of the parking lot by incorporating flower beds and trees. The facade of the building along Via Pievaiola presents a compact structure, with paired pillars and thin openings, surmounted by a horizontal band that hosts the company's logo. The various coverings, including sail vaults for the production area and a similar structure for the nursery, highlight the innovation in the plant's design. The expansion in the 1980s introduced an external covering with a geometric grid, which currently also houses the Perugina Historical Museum, offering a multimedia and educational experience. The design of the facility stands out for the use of pillars that widen upwards, supporting the channel beams for the air conditioning system, key elements of the structure supporting the vaults. The roof is composed of a series of thin pre-stressed reinforced concrete vaults, ensuring sound and thermal insulation, representing a model of excellence in contemporary industrial architecture and retaining its cultural value for the city of Perugia.
