BUILDING 102 - JOINT RESEARCH CENTER

New offices building of the Ispra Joint Research Center

Building 102 houses the I.P.S.C. division of the Ispra Joint Research Center, housing offices, meeting rooms, four conference rooms and three laboratories.
The project articulates the rooms in two buildings, of four and five levels above ground, both “elle shaped” and arranged in such a way as to enclose a fullheight internal court, covered by a transparent roof.

The offices, single and double and served in each building from a central corridor, overlook both the external front, which is designed with ribbon windows, and on the inner court, maintaining a flexible layout, with non-structural partitions. The meeting rooms are located on the top floor and have access to open spaces accessible from which you can enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains; in the basement there is a small auditorium, protected from light and noise.

The Court is protected by a double layer ETFE covering, bearing type: this gives the cover high thermal and acoustic performances, maintaining a high transparency and the possibility of solar shading by printing on the inner layer.
This space, in addition to allowing the lighting of the internal fronts, acts as a ‘climate buffer’, reducing the heat loss of the offices that face it, creating a common space that can be used throughout the year by all JRC users. , lending
itself to host events and events.

Seen from the outside, the volume appears rigorous and very compact; this choice was motivated due to the optimization of the surface / volume ratio, to contain dispersions and achieve the highest energy savings.
The building meets high environmental requirements: class A CENED Lombardia, Outstanding rating according to BREEAM, nearly 0 energy building ‘nZEB’.

The “green” strategies adopted, both active and passive, concern both the energy aspects (high thermal performance of the casing, the containment of glazed surfaces, sun protection through louvers, high-performance air conditioning system with activated floors and heat recovery, production of energy from renewable sources with geothermal plant, photovoltaic panels and for solar thermal, use of lighting fixtures with low energy consumption), as well as those related to the water cycle, the waste cycle and sustainable mobility.
